Loveth Sunday, a 27-year-old hairstylist from Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, was involved in a fatal accident three weeks after her introduction ceremony. She was knocked down by a bus with a brake failure and lost her left leg. Two people died in the crash.
'It happened so fast,' Loveth said. 'I was standing by the roadside when the bus veered off the road and hit me. I didn't see it coming.' She was rushed to the hospital by sympathisers and spent five days in a coma.
Five hospitals rejected her initially, but she was finally admitted to Uzondu Orthopaedic Hospital in Ojoto. The doctors told her that her left leg was damaged beyond repair and would have to be amputated. 'I was so scared,' Loveth said. 'But the doctor convinced me that it was the only way to save my life.'
The amputation cost her family N2.5m. Now, Loveth is struggling to find a prosthetic leg that fits her. 'I've been told that there are different types of prosthetics with different prices,' she said. 'Some cost as low as N850,000, while others are as high as N2.5m.'
Her fiancé has since called off their wedding plans, but Loveth is not letting it break her spirit. 'I'm taking things one day at a time,' she said. 'I'm focusing on getting better and finding a way to support myself.'
Loveth's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Despite everything she's been through, she remains positive and determined to make a better life for herself.
'I'm trusting God that one day I'll be able to get a good prosthetic leg and be able to walk without much difficulty,' Loveth said.
The accident happened on April 12, 2019, and Loveth has been dealing with the aftermath ever since. She's had to relearn how to walk and perform daily tasks with her new prosthetic leg.
'It's been tough, but I'm managing,' she said. 'I'm grateful to be alive and I'm determined to make the most of my situation.'
Loveth's story is a reminder that life is full of unexpected twists and turns. But with determination and resilience, we can overcome even the toughest challenges.
