August Bloodbath: Nigerian Troops Neutralise 324 Terrorists, Rescue Over 600 Kidnapped Victims

August was a bloody month on Nigerian soil as troops prosecuting various internal security operations neutralised a staggering 324 terrorists and criminal elements. Beyond the killings, forces also managed to rescue over 621 persons who had been kidnapped, bringing some relief to families gripped by fear.

Major General Michael Onoja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, laid out the grim figures at a briefing in Abuja. It wasn't just about taking down fighters; the military also made a significant dent in organised crime, arresting over 373 terrorists and criminal elements. But the fight isn't only against insurgents. In the Niger Delta, troops discovered and deactivated 21 illegal refinery sites. They didn't just find them; they recovered a whopping 686,800 litres of stolen crude oil products, hitting economic saboteurs where it hurts.

And it wasn't just about kills and arrests. A total of 201 insurgents reportedly surrendered to troops during the month. Alongside the human cost, the military recovered 88 assorted arms and a massive 2,077 rounds of ammunition from these criminal elements.

In the North West, specifically under Operation Fansan Yamma, troops had a particularly active August. They rescued 126 kidnap victims and were responsible for neutralising 190 terrorists, with 47 more arrested. One notable incident on August 2nd saw troops intercepting 21 people suspected of moving through Giwa LGA in Kaduna State. Investigations later confirmed five of them were terrorists, while the others were allowed to go after profiling.

Further afield, in Sokoto State, security forces on August 6th arrested four suspects in Darusa Village Market, Gudu LGA. They were found with six rustled cattle, mobile phones, and ₦165,000, believed to be proceeds from illicit sales.

Zamfara State continued to be a hotbed of activity. On August 7th, troops engaged terrorists in Kwanar Jollof, Shinkafi LGA, and Birnin Tsaba Village along the Birnin Magaji-Zurmi Road. The terrorists were forced to retreat, leaving behind motorcycles, camouflage gear, and communication equipment.

Later in the same month, a suspected terrorist collaborator and logistics facilitator was apprehended in Maradun, Zamfara State. He was carrying ₦5,302,000, allegedly meant to be delivered to terrorist associates. Then, on August 8th, troops responding to activity around Magazu Village in Tsafe LGA forced terrorists to abandon several kidnap victims, though efforts to rescue everyone are ongoing.

The violence wasn't one-sided. On August 10th, while troops neutralised 18 terrorists in Makuku Village, Sakaba LGA, Kebbi State, they tragically lost some local security personnel and one civilian. Surveillance in the area has since been heightened.

That same day, troops clashed with terrorists in Ruwan Lafiya Village, Kankara LGA, Katsina State, recovering an abandoned motorcycle. More disturbingly, two suspected foreign nationals, believed to be IED experts, were arrested in Zurmi, Zamfara State. Their arrest highlights the international dimension some of these criminal networks possess.

Kaduna and Kano States also saw action. On August 12th, a suspect was arrested in Kadage, Giwa LGA, Kaduna State, with foreign camouflage items and identification documents. In Kano, along the Gwarzo-Kano Road, a suspected logistics supplier was caught with ammunition and other incriminating items.

Further arrests and recoveries continued throughout the month. Between August 17th and 19th, troops recovered 28 abducted victims across Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto States. On August 14th, a suspect was arrested in Zamfara State with 180 units of Super Power Explosives, reportedly destined for terrorists in Katsina.

In a significant breakthrough, troops arrested suspected collaborators of a notorious terrorist kingpin in Kaura Namoda LGA, Zamfara State. This led to the apprehension of six additional informants linked to the abduction of an immigration officer's family and students from the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda.

Kano again featured on August 19th, with the arrest of a suspected terrorist informant in Shanono LGA, accused of monitoring troop movements. Finally, between August 22nd and 26th, troops rescued a further 31 abducted persons in various locations across Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. The month concluded with the arrest of a notorious terrorist kingpin, Mallam Sanusi Mai Glass, and his associate in Dutsinma LGA, Katsina State.
