Two Convictions in a Major Boost to Abia's

Fight Against Sexual Violence

The Abia State Government says two child sex offenders have been convicted and sentenced to long jail terms. The government says the convictions demonstrate its zero-tolerance stance against sexual offences and sends a strong message that perpetrators will be brought to justice.

In a statement released on Monday, Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the convictions were among the notable achievements of the Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) at the General Hospital, Aba. The centre provides medical, psychosocial, and referral services to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

According to Kanu, the centre is currently handling two fresh cases involving the alleged gang rape of a 60-year-old woman and the defilement of a five-year-old girl. The government says it remains committed to protecting vulnerable persons and warned that perpetrators of sexual offences will face the full weight of the law.

Speedy Prosecution Due to Effective Collaboration

Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Ngozi Felix, attributed the speedy prosecution to effective collaboration among the Ministries of Health, Justice, Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, as well as the Nigeria Police Force. Felix commended the Commissioner of Police in Abia, Danladi Isa, for the command's support in investigating and prosecuting sexual violence cases.

The government has established a Sex Offenders Register at the Ministry of Justice to document the identities of convicted offenders as a deterrent to others. The register will serve as a public reminder of the consequences of committing such heinous crimes.

Background: Abia's Fight Against Sexual Violence

In recent years, Abia State has been at the forefront of the fight against sexual violence in Nigeria. The state government has implemented several policies and programmes aimed at protecting vulnerable persons, particularly children and women.

The Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre, established by the state government, provides essential services to survivors of sexual violence. The centre has been instrumental in the conviction of several suspects accused of committing such atrocities.

The Next Steps

The government says it will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators of sexual violence to justice. The establishment of the Sex Offenders Register is a major step in this direction.

The government has also called on the people of Abia to remain vigilant and report any cases of sexual violence to the authorities. The people must work together to ensure that those who commit such crimes are brought to justice and punished accordingly.
