Fifteen people, all males, died in a trailer accident on the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway in Kwara State on Monday at 2:32 am. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that 48 people were involved in the crash.

The accident occurred at the Muslim cemetery entrance along the Ogbomoso-Oko Olowo route. The trailer vehicle, a DAF XF, had registration number GWL274XC.

According to the FRSC, 17 people sustained varying degrees of injury, while 16 people were reported unhurt. The sector commander, Kabiru Kazeem, gave the name of the driver as Nasiru Muhammed.

The driver, Nasiru Muhammed, blamed fatigue as the reason for the accident. The FRSC sector commander, Kabiru Kazeem, said the injured victims had been taken to Arewa Medical Centre and Baki Hospital for medical attention.

The corpses had been handed over to the representative of the families and Sarkin Hausawa, Oko Olowo, in the Moro Local Government area of Kwara State. The FRSC sector commander advised motorists to avoid mixed loading and night travelling.

Kazeem said the search for more victims who were buried under the load was ongoing. The rescue operation was jointly carried out by personnel of RS8.15 Oloru and RS8.1 Kwara (Oko Olowo outpost).

The sector commander also said the command intended to intensify public enlightenment through the town hall meeting with relevant stakeholders.

Nigerian roads are notorious for deadly accidents. The government has been under increasing pressure to improve the state of the roads and make them safer for commuters.

Kwara State is one of the most populous states in Nigeria, with millions of people relying on its roads for daily activities. The federal government has announced plans to revamp the road network in the country, but many Nigerians are skeptical about the success of these plans.

The FRSC has been working tirelessly to improve road safety in the country. However, their efforts seem to be in vain, given the frequency of deadly accidents on Nigerian roads.

This is the third major accident to occur on the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway this year alone. The FRSC sector commander has warned motorists to be extra cautious on the road and avoid night travelling.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for action to be taken to address the state of the roads. The government has promised to investigate the incident and take necessary steps to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.

The FRSC sector commander has announced that the command will be intensifying public enlightenment through town hall meetings with relevant stakeholders. However, many Nigerians are skeptical about the effectiveness of these measures.

The incident has also raised questions about the competence of the driver and the trailer's maintenance. Many Nigerians are calling for the driver to be held accountable for the accident.
