Muranga Governor Irungu Kang'ata has officially joined the Linda Mwananchi movement, a coalition of opposition leaders pushing for change in Kenya's leadership. He made the announcement at a rally in Thika Town, Kiambu County, where Siaya Senator James Orengo welcomed him to the team.
Kang'ata didn't hold back. He said the Kenya Kwanza government's focus on affordable housing is totally misplaced. "The funds being used to support the affordable housing programme should be channeled into offering free education to Kenyan students," he told the crowd.
He also called on Linda Mwananchi to work closely with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. "I am interested in Kenya that will create opportunities for the youth through jobs which aren't available at the moment," Kang'ata said.
The rally was part of a broader push by Linda Mwananchi and the United Opposition to send President William Ruto home in the 2027 general election. Siaya Governor James Orengo claimed Ruto's popularity is dropping fast because he hasn't delivered on his promises. "The problem in Kenya isn't the United Opposition or Linda Mwananchi but Ruto is the problem and he has to go home in 2027 for Kenyans to be safe," Orengo said.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said they've toured the country and realised Ruto has no support in most parts. He wondered where Ruto will get votes since 80 percent of Kenyans are against his leadership. "Most Kenyans are impoverished due to the unpopular policies made by Ruto which has made life very difficult," Sifuna added. He promised that once in office, they'll cut the State House budget, accusing Ruto of frequently changing state house structures and driving up costs unnecessarily.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino told Kenyans not to accept handouts to re-elect Ruto. "Take the money and vote out the repressive regime," he said. He listed broken promises on free education and job creation, blaming corruption in the Ruto regime. In a bizarre claim, Babu also accused the government of bringing Ebola to the country.
Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi said Linda Mwananchi has the support of all Kenyans, causing panic in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance. He criticised leaders working with Ruto under the broad-based arrangement, saying they're making life harder for Kenyans.
Suba South MP Caroli Omondi reminded the crowd that Ruto himself asked Kenyans to give him five years to turn things around. "Now that he's failed, we should replace him," Omondi said.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka declared that the country is ripe for leadership change due to the hard economic times.
