Jewellery Firm Sues Donewell Insurance
ELOK & Sons Ltd., a reputable jewellery company in Takoradi, has hit the headlines for taking Donewell Insurance Limited to court over alleged failure to honour a $3 million insurance claim. The matter, filed at the Sekondi High Court, has sparked concerns about the reliability of insurance policies in Ghana.
According to court documents, the jewellery shop was burgled on September 1, 2025, with stock valued at $3 million stolen. ELOK & Sons had purchased a fire and burglary insurance policy from Donewell Insurance in August 2025, which covered its jewellery stock. The policy was valued at $3 million, with a premium of $4,266 paid in US dollars.
The company claimed that it immediately notified Donewell Insurance of the incident by email but received no substantive response for over a week. An investigator identified as Hammond visited its premises on September 13, 2025, to ask questions and conduct preliminary inquiries. The plaintiff further stated that it had submitted a police investigation report to Donewell Insurance on September 26, 2025, but received no communication until October 14, 2025.
ELOK & Sons claims that Donewell Insurance's alleged delays in handling the claim forced its manager to visit the insurer's office to complain about their 'lethargic approach'. However, the company argues that the requests made by Donewell Insurance were unreasonable and inconsistent with the terms of the insurance agreement.
The jewellery company seeks damages for breach of contract, as well as compensation for the losses it says it suffered as a result of Donewell Insurance's alleged failure to honour the policy. The writ of summons, issued on June 22, 2026, outlines the plaintiff's claims, which include the loss of the stolen jewellery stock and the current value of that stock as special damages.
