The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has told Ghanaians not to expect load-shedding during the 2026 FIFA World Cup — and it's made sure the people in charge of the grid are ready.

On June 9, 2026, PURC met with the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to align plans for stable power throughout the tournament. The goal: let consumers watch every match without interruptions.

PURC's Executive Secretary, Dr Shafic Suleman, announced a monitoring framework that'll track electricity supply reliability nationwide. Two directorates — Energy Services and Performance Monitoring (ESPM) and Regional Operations and Consumer Services (ROCS) — will actively watch the grid. PURC will also keep direct lines open with key technical staff at both utilities for quick regulatory action if something goes wrong.

ECG's Acting Managing Director, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, said the company has suspended all planned maintenance for the World Cup period. Only emergency fault repairs will be done. Standby technical teams and contractors will be stationed at strategic locations across the country for rapid response. ECG will also work with national security agencies to protect critical infrastructure from vandalism and other threats.

GRIDCo CEO Ing. Frank Otchere said the transmission company has deferred non-critical maintenance and fixed known weak points in the network. Vegetation along transmission corridors has been cleared to prevent trees from bringing down power lines. All major substations will be physically manned 24/7, with area managers on standby. Generation schedules have also been coordinated with power producers to ensure enough supply.

Dr Suleman praised both utilities for what he called 'proactive and consumer-focused measures.' He said the plans show a deliberate commitment to protect consumers and improve service.

'The measures outlined by ECG and GRIDCo reflect intentional efforts to provide reliable electricity supply and safeguard the interests of consumers during this important period,' he said.

PURC has also directed the two companies to adopt a coordinated stakeholder communication strategy for transparency and public accountability.

If you're planning to watch matches at home or at a viewing centre, the authorities say you shouldn't experience the usual unannounced blackouts. ECG and GRIDCo have promised to prioritise emergency repairs and keep the grid stable. But if faults do occur, the utilities say they'll give timely updates on restoration efforts. PURC has assured the public it'll keep monitoring closely and respond to any challenges that come up.
