Florence Obinim has had enough.
The gospel musician, wife of controversial Bishop Daniel Obinim, says she's ready for a divorce if that's what her husband wants. In an interview with GhPage published Wednesday, she opened up about years of frustration in their marriage.
“I've been humble and patient with Bishop, yet he still doesn't appreciate the kind of woman I am,” Florence said. “May God's will be done. If he's ready for a divorce, then I'm ready too.”
She admitted she doesn't know what more her husband expects from her at this stage. And she dropped a warning: there are things about Bishop Obinim's personal life she's chosen not to discuss publicly — but if she did, it wouldn't be pleasant.
“If I choose to speak about certain things that concern me about Bishop's life, it wouldn't be pleasant. There are things I'm entitled to that would give me peace of mind, but if I'm denied them, I simply stay quiet. If I need to buy or rent them myself, I go ahead and do so.”
Despite her frustrations, Florence appealed for prayers for her husband. She called on junior pastors and others close to the bishop to intercede on his behalf, saying the situation in the marriage has become increasingly troubling.
This public airing comes weeks after Bishop Obinim made comments in church that fuelled speculation. He reportedly said that when he dies, his funeral should be handled by the church — not his wife. About a week later, he claimed his wife had started making bad friends and asked church members to allow him to “stay back,” though he insisted divorce wasn't an option.
The Obinims have been married for years, and their relationship has often played out in public. Bishop Obinim is the founder of International God's Way Church and is known for his flamboyant style and controversial teachings. Florence is a gospel singer who has often stood by her husband through scandals.
Now, she says she's done fighting. “I've spent years being patient, respectful and supportive as a wife, but my efforts haven't been recognised,” she said.
For now, the ball is in the bishop's court. But Florence has made it clear she won't be the one to walk away quietly.
