The management of Lagos State University (LASU) is now looking into serious allegations that some lecturers have failed to upload students’ results, a move that could cause significant delays in graduation and force some students to spend an extra year at the institution. The university management made a public statement about the issue on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday after the claims started making waves online.
"The attention of the University Management has been drawn to this allegation, and the matter is currently being looked into. Thank you for bringing it to our attention," the management posted. The controversy blew up after the university's convocation ceremony when claims surfaced online that more than 100 students were left in limbo because a lecturer allegedly never uploaded their results since they were in their 300-level studies.
Sources suggest that these students might now face an additional year in the university, not because they failed any courses, but simply because their results were not processed. The situation gained more traction when an X user, @TheAjakeManger, amplified the claims, alleging that the problem was much bigger than initially reported and affected more students. This user also claimed that a Head of Department had threatened some of the affected students and that current 400-level students were also facing similar academic roadblocks.
According to the user's allegations, the academic problems related to unprocessed results were impacting over 1,000 students across the 200, 300, and 400 levels in the department. While online claims have pointed fingers at two specific lecturers, the university management stressed that no one has been found guilty yet, as the matter is still under active investigation. The institution's official stance is that it is thoroughly examining the situation.
Meanwhile, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akinteye Babatunde, took to X on Saturday to announce that both the student body and the Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Lagos Axis had already begun discussions with the university’s administration. He urged the affected students to stay calm.
"To all @LASUOfficial students that are affected with this, please remain calm as discussions have been opened with the management by the leadership of NANS and JCC LAGOS AXIS. The Management has assured us of resolving the issue next week, so please remain calm and don’t take actions that will be counterproductive," Babatunde wrote. Student leaders have been assured by the university management that the issue will be addressed and hopefully resolved in the coming week.
The LASU management is expected to release more details regarding the outcome of its internal inquiry as soon as it concludes its findings. This situation highlights the critical need for efficient administrative processes in universities, especially concerning the timely processing and uploading of student results, which directly impacts graduation timelines and student welfare.
