A disturbing scene unfolded in Glenmore Park, Sydney, early Thursday morning. A 64-year-old man was found dead with significant burns in the driveway of his western Sydney home on Wargon Crescent. The incident occurred at around 12.50am and emergency services were called to the scene.
NSW Police Superintendent Trent King described the scene as 'distressing' and said the victim's son, 36, was arrested in a car on Parkes Avenue, Werrington, about 6.45am. The son was treated for minor injuries to his hands and feet before being taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard. After his release from hospital, he was charged with domestic violence-related murder and refused police bail, and is due to face Penrith Local Court on Friday.
There appears to have been an altercation between the two parties. 'Until we have forensic examinations of the deceased, [it's] very difficult to indicate what the cause of death was,' King said. An accelerant is believed to have been used in the incident and the front door of the home had been forced open.
Detectives have appealed for CCTV or dashcam footage from around the Glenmore Park property as they continue investigating the 'distressing' scene. The victim's son had 'co-operated with police during his arrest.' His car and the surrounding scene were being examined.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and provide any footage they may have. The police are particularly interested in any footage that may show the victim's car leaving the scene or the son's car being driven away.
'And not a normal scene for anybody to be confronted with, particularly the extent of the injuries to our victim,' King said.
The police have not released the victim's name, awaiting forensic examination.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are reviewing the footage and gathering more evidence.
The police have also appealed for anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious around the time of the incident to contact them.
The police are urging everyone to remain calm and cooperative.
The victim's family is being supported by the police and counseling services.
The police have released a statement saying that they are working hard to investigate the incident and bring those involved to justice.
