A teenage boy has allegedly stabbed another student at his south Brisbane school.
A 17-year-old boy was stabbed about 11.47am on Tuesday at the Islamic College of Brisbane on Acacia Road at Karawatha, near Logan. He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition, but has since stabilised.
The two boys involved in the altercation were known to each other, police said. The school later confirmed both were students at the college.
Officers remained on the scene with paramedics just before 1.30pm and said they were patrolling nearby streets.
A 16-year-old boy was later arrested inside a vehicle in Gowan Road in the neighbouring Brisbane suburb of Stretton, and was assisting police with their inquiries.
Ali Kadri, the principal of the Islamic College of Brisbane, said the school had confirmed the injured student was 'doing OK'.
'This incident has caused significant concern for all parents and students,' Kadri said. 'But rest assured that we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of everyone at our school.'
The school emailed parents to tell them students would be dismissed about an hour earlier than usual, after 'an incident on campus'. The email said the decision was a 'precautionary measure to support the wellbeing of our students and staff and to allow the college to appropriately manage the situation'.
Director of educational operations Tariq Ismail told media the school was cooperating with police, and prioritising staff and student wellbeing.
Ismail said a 'significant amount of information' was circulating online, and urged the community to refrain from sharing inaccurate or unverified details.
'There is no ongoing risk to the college community,' Ismail said. 'However, we appreciate the community's understanding in not sharing speculation and misinformation.'
The Islamic College of Brisbane, which is one of the largest Islamic schools in Australia, has over 1700 students and 230 staff. It teaches classes from prep to year 12.
The school has been in the headlines before, including when Pauline Hanson, the leader of the One Nation party, visited the school in July wearing an Israeli flag pin. The school is now grappling with the fallout of the recent stabbing.
